Packing and Guiding
as a Career
STARTING
OCTOBER
2007
This is a 6-session course that will teach packing and
guiding as a career for both the hunter and non-hunter. You
will get hands-on experience in outfitting, including
packing a string of horses, setting up camp and using the
“Leave No Trace” techniques for minimizing damage to the
wilderness.
The classes will cover hiking, backpacking, trail rides,
pack trips, outdoor photography and camping. You will learn
different hunting methods such still hunting, stand hunting,
and stalking and tracking with an emphasis on hunter safety,
hunting ethics and care of game. As a guide, you will learn
to judge and deal with your client as to physical condition,
attitude and diplomacy. You will be shown the proper
professional guide equipment and how to care and repair it.
We will emphasize leadership skills and organization of
people and equipment and give you the information needed to
start your own business. Guests from the California Fish &
Game and the U.S. Forestry will attend selected classes.
